Lagos State has reached a significant milestone in its climate action journey with the official launch of the Lagos Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR) Africa’s first digital greenhouse gas registry of its kind. Developed through a strategic partnership between the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), TPHG Technologies, and Swanlux Global Investments, the platform marks a new era of transparent emissions management, digital Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV), and data-driven environmental governance.
Held at NECA House, Ikeja, the launch brought together a distinguished audience of government officials, policymakers, development partners, industry leaders, environmental experts, academia, and private sector stakeholders, all united by a shared commitment to building a more sustainable and climate-resilient Lagos.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were representatives of the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Council on Climate Change, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, senior officials from the Lagos State Government, heads of government agencies and parastatals, alongside climate and sustainability professionals whose collective presence underscored the importance of collaborative action in addressing climate challenges.
Beyond unveiling a digital platform, the event created a space for meaningful dialogue on the future of climate governance in Nigeria and across Africa. During an engaging panel session, experts explored the role of digital MRV systems in strengthening emissions reporting, improving policy decisions, and enhancing transparency and accountability. Discussions also highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in building credible carbon markets and ensuring that technology remains at the heart of sustainable development.
A key highlight of the event was the premiere of a documentary chronicling the vision behind the Lagos Greenhouse Gas Registry. The film captured Lagos’ journey toward embracing digital climate solutions and showcased the partnerships, innovation, and shared commitment that made the Registry a reality. It served as a powerful reminder that meaningful climate action begins with reliable data and collective responsibility.
The day’s most symbolic moment came when the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, officially logged into the Registry, becoming its first official user. More than a ceremonial gesture, the login marked the transition from vision to implementation, signalling the beginning of a new chapter in how greenhouse gas emissions will be monitored, reported, and managed across Lagos State.
As Africa’s first digital greenhouse gas registry of its kind, the LGHGR establishes a benchmark for cities seeking to leverage technology to drive environmental accountability. It reflects what is possible when government, technology partners, and the private sector work together toward a common goal.
